Dear Pearlridge Management,
My family and I have been satisfied customers of your mall for many years. The great deals and variety in stores and restaurants keep us coming back for almost every occasion.
However, we have encountered some problems lately with other customers in the mall who use Electronic Smoking Devices (ESDs) more commonly known as, e-cigarettes, while shopping or dining in your mall. A few weeks ago my family and I went to Pearlridge Uptown to try the newly opened restaurant, Goma Tei. While waiting for our name to be called, we stood outside the restaurant and within a few minutes my siblings began coughing; claiming that they had a hard time breathing. Standing across of us were two guys smoking e-cigarettes allowing the toxic aerosols from the liquids in the vapors roam throughout the enclosed mall. I understand that in Pearlridge Downtown there is a kiosk that sells the popular brand of Volcano e-cigs which is why my family and I avoid walking through that specific area of the mall, but I feel that smoking e-cigarettes in an enclosed mall such as Pearlridge should be banned. Many other public facilities such as movie theaters and Honolulu city buses have banned the use of e-cigs while in the enclosed area. I think it is not unreasonable for the use of e-cigs to be banned from your mall as well.
In addition, when my mom took my siblings to go get some fresh air outside there were a group of people smoking their e-cigs near the entrance closest to Robeks. I understand that e-cigs are claimed to be "safer" than conventional smoking, but the effects of second hand smoke from the vapors still impacts others around the smoker.
Through this all, the waiter at Goma Tei was understanding and accommodated for us; offering us extra chairs so that we could wait inside. He sympathized with our concern for the safety of customers in the mall and shared that other customers expressed the same issue. With all that stores and eateries have to do to ensure a pleasant experience for your customers, I do not think that they should be put in this situation by having to constantly deal with the consequences of customers who smoke ESDs in your mall.
I have no objection to your policies regarding the sale of ESDs at your mall but I feel that you should ban the use of ESDs for the safety of other customers who enjoy coming to shop and dine at Pearlridge Center.
Sincerely,
Jocelyn Bonilla
