THG: 13-21 Reading Review

1. Katniss & Rue devise a scheme to distract the career tributes by setting up three different fires essentially leaving the Career's camp out or base unguarded making it easier to destroy the Career's food source. Fortunately, Katniss was smart enough to figure out the set up and she was successful in destroying every bit of food the Career's had. Unfortunately, Rue was less lucky and ended up dying.
"I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can't own." (pg. 236-237)

2. After the new ruling, Katniss sets out determined to find Peeta and figures that the only place he could be based on how he's been able to live for that past few days is near a water source. She ends up finding him camouflaged somewhere along the stream and in desperate need of medical attention. Once they reach a hidden cave, they continue to play the audience with the whole romance strategy, exchanging kisses and showing their affection towards one another every so often.
"I spend the night half-sitting, half-lying next to Peeta, refreshing the bandage, and trying not to dwell on the fact that by teaming up with him, I've made myself far more vulnerable than when I was alone." (pg. 263)

3.

  • a) Katniss is pursued by Clover, the girl from District 2, as she attempts to get the bag marked District 12.
  • b) She is able to successfully retrieve the bag thanks to Thresh, the boy from District 8, who not only saved her life but spared her life as well.
  • c) The bag contains a hypodermic needle to help heal Peeta.
  • "Just this one time, I let you go. For the little girl. You and me, we're even then. No more owed. You understand?" (pg. 288)

4. Survival is essential in the games and tribute, Katniss Everdeen, will do will do whatever it takes to ensure herself and Peeta's well being. "If I want to keep Peeta alive, I've got to give the audience something more to care about." (pg. 261) Realizing how powerful the whole play on romance turns out, Katniss uses their love act as a strategy to help keep Peeta alive, just like how Peeta expressed his feelings towards Katniss during the interviews and joined the Career Pack early on in the games only to protect Katniss. Although Katniss claims she is only acting and pretending to be in love fir the sake of Peeta's health and winning the games, she genuinely cares for him by risking her life to retrieve the backpack at the Cornucopia during the feast. "Unlike the staged kisses and caresses so far, this gesture seems natural and comforting." (pg. 265) Katniss' feelings toward Peeta begin to grow and although she may not know it herself, she allows her actions to speak for themselves. If she did not genuinely care for Peeta, she wouldn't have shouted for him; risking other tributes to hear her when the new ruling was announced nor would she have tried so hard to help Peeta recover. Therefore, Katniss truly does care about Peeta even if she herself may not know it.
